Choose clothing carefully for a child custody hearing

First impressions mean a lot in most instances. Most families have had the “you’re not wearing that” talk with a teen or have had to buy new clothes that fit with a new work environment. But what a Michigan parent wears to court during a child custody hearing may make an impression on a family court judge which could be either positive or negative.

Conveying the right message in court

A parent who is trying to gain custody of his or her children during a divorce will want to present information that will be beneficial to that end. Everything that is said and done in a courtroom may influence the decision of a judge, so walking into court wearing improper clothing may not bode well for a parent’s case. The person’s appearance and attitude should be one of confidence since the message one is trying to convey is that children will be taken care of properly. If someone goes to court looking unkempt and wearing sloppy and dirty clothes it may not send the right message.

Other things that may make a difference

Alongside clothing chosen to wear to court, other things that may matter are someone’s hairstyle, the accessories they choose to wear, and for women — how cosmetics are applied. Professionals say that casual business attire is usually best for court. These items can include dress pants, knee-length (or longer) skirts, blazers, button-down collared shirts and low-heeled shoes. Attire that should be avoided are pants that sag below the waist, any sweat shirts or sweat pants, anything that exposes an excess amount of skin, jeans with holes or rips and stiletto heels.

Some courts may actually publish a list of unsuitable clothing. If a Michigan resident is unsure, he or she may wish to speak to a lawyer experienced in child custody issues. Having someone knowledgeable in court procedures and etiquette to make recommendations may help in making prudent decisions on court room attire.
