Man in custody, facing robbery charges for purse-snatching

A Michigan man has been charged in connection with an alleged purse-snatching incident in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Authorities report that the 28-year-old man is accused of throwing a 54-year-old woman to the ground in the parking lot of a retail establishment before sealing her purse. A bystander reportedly caught up to the man and then tackled and held him until police arrived at the scene.

The man is officially charged with felony robbery in connection with the incident. He is also accused of a misdemeanor drug offense because paraphernalia was allegedly found on his person at the time of the arrest. He could spend more than a decade in custody if he is convicted. The man is being held on a $10,000 bond after prosecutors successfully argued that the man's crimes should be considered violent. Defense attorneys may be able to help defendants learn more about the nature of their specific bonds during the preliminary stages of a criminal proceeding.

The victim says that the defendant approached her from the rear as she was loading her vehicle with purchases. She was knocked down when the man allegedly wrenched her purse from her hands. The woman's purse was found in a nearby yard, where its content has been scattered. The woman recently had surgery on her shoulder, and she suffered some injuries in the incident. It is not clear whether medical attention will be necessary.

Authorities say they are investigating the man for a string of other recent purse thefts in the area. He was accused of taking a woman's purse at a bar in early April. The man has a fairly significant criminal record that includes an 18-month stint in prison for a 2009 robbery. The man was also locked up after he allegedly beat a handicapped man in front of a Sheboygan tavern.
