New initiative aimed at reducing drunk driving

A drunk driving charge can be serious whether you live in Michigan or elsewhere. However, officials are trying to do what they can to prevent people from getting behind the wheel of a car after they have been drinking.

Talking urinal-deodorizer cakes have been distributed to bars and restaurants all over the state. A recorded message is played to men as they use the urinal. The message is intended to deter people from drinking and driving by encouraging them to call a friend or take a cab.

The talking urinal cakes are all part of an effort to cut down on drunk driving over the Fourth of July holiday. In addition to the talking urinal cakes, counties throughout the state are stepping up patrols. The extra enforcement will run through July 8.

Other states across the Midwest will also be stepping up enforcement. Authorities in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio will be on the lookout for impaired drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2010 close to 400 people died in alcohol-related crashes over the Fourth of July holiday.

People who are charged with OWI could face severe penalties. In addition to fines and license suspension, a person could also face time behind bars. A conviction could impact a person's entire life.

Most people don't intend to drink and drive. However, mistakes happen. When people are charged with OWI in Michigan it is often wise to consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney as early on in the process as possible.
