Alleged Shelby Twp. drunk driver had child in car

One man's possible lapse in judgment, paired with a celebratory time of year, has him facing charges that could potentially carry with them harsh, life-altering punishments.

Michigan residents from all walks of life find themselves facing drunk driving charges. The only problem is, the state's legal system is unforgiving, and one slip-up can mean fines, restriction of one's driver's license and even jail time.

A 33-year-old man from Shelby Township is in such a situation after police pulled him over at 2 a.m. on New Year's Eve, suspecting that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. To compound the man's troubles, police discovered that a 4-year-old child was riding in his car, along with two dogs.

The man was pulled over where Big Beaver Road intersects with Rochester Road after police received complaints from fellow drivers about a swerving vehicle.

Police said that the man confessed to drinking eight beers, and that he could not tell them where he was coming from or what his destination was. While speaking with the man, police said they noticed his speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol.

Police also claim that the man had a blood alcohol content of .20, which is well beyond the .08 standard in the state of Michigan.

The man was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated third offense and child endangerment. Media reports did not clarify whether he was able to post bond to get out of jail.

Being a third offense, the man will likely face the high end of potential punishment for drunk drivers in Michigan. He must weigh his options on whether or not to plead guilty to the charges, and find a way that he can minimize his punishment while seeking the help that he clearly needs.
