Hundreds arrested in Michigan for alleged drunk driving

A drunk driving charge is very serious, and a drunk driving conviction could seriously impact a person's life. Recently, hundreds of Michigan motorists were arrested for allegedly drinking and driving.

From March 13 to April 2, law enforcement officers across the state stepped up drunk driving enforcement through the "Drunk driving. Over the Limit, Under Arrest" campaign. During the three-week period, law enforcement officers made 8,083 traffic stops and arrested 405 people for alleged drunk driving.

Of the more than 400 drunk driving arrests, police say 79 people were found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.17 or higher and were charged under the state's high blood alcohol content law.

In addition to cracking down on drunk driving, law enforcement officers also made 214 misdemeanor and felony arrests. During the three-week period, more than 700 tickets were issued for speeding, five stolen vehicles were recovered and 161 fugitives were arrested.

When someone is convicted of drunk driving in Michigan they could face harsh penalties. On the first offense, a person could lose their driver's license for six months. On the second offense, a person could lose their license for an entire year. In addition, a person could face time behind bars and large fines.

Fortunately, a person that has been charged with drunk driving still has rights, and they are entitled to a strong defense. Working with an attorney early on in the process may prove to be beneficial. An attorney can investigate the evidence in a case and work to mitigate any potential consequences.
